The newest fitness trends

Do you follow trends? Do you like to be up-to-date on the latest and greatest? Well, the fitness industry is always trending. From technology to training, just about everything in the world of fitness is changing the way you exercise—some for the better and some just for fun. Here are a few fitness trends to keep an eye out for this year.

#1 Wearable technology

It’s not enough to just do your workout. You want something that tells you how hard you’re working, how far you’ve ran, how many calories you’ve burned, how many steps you’ve taken, how many flights of stairs you’ve walked. Even when you’re not exercising, you can still keep track of your daily activities (or lack of). Wearable technology has also been a good motivator to get people moving who might not otherwise do so. It’s always good to try and can get in those 10,000 steps each day!

#2 Group Training

Some may argue group training never went out of style, but for a while, it seemed to be losing a little bit of steam. Well, that’s now changed. People are finding their motivation in numbers. Group training offers camaraderie, support and a sense of community. And for some people, that’s exactly what they need to get started and to keep going.

#3 High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Why exercise for hours when you could finish in 30 minutes or less? Long bouts of cardio have been replaced with interval training—cycles of short bursts of high intensity. You’ll burn more calories, you’ll increase your cardiovascular endurance and you’ll be done in half the time!

#4 Functional Training

This trend started a few years ago yet still remains popular. Functional training refers to doing exercises that mimic your everyday movements like sitting down, getting up, reaching, twisting, etc. Training your body in this way improves strength, balance and coordination, and decreases your risk of injury. Functional training is especially beneficial for older adults.

#5 Yoga

It’s a bit strange to think of something trending now that’s been around for centuries, yet yoga is still one of the most popular forms of exercise. Yoga studios are popping up everywhere and are appealing to all ages—from teenagers to senior citizens. Many gyms and yoga studios offer mommy and me classes for moms and their babies giving child’s pose a whole new meaning. Yoga has also been beneficial for people who want a more mental and spiritual benefit as it helps you to relax and reduce stress.

#6 Prescribing Exercise

Doctors have always known that exercise can drastically improve their patient’s health and well-being. In some cases, it can even reverse the adverse effects of certain health issues. Instead of merely suggesting it, doctors are taking out their script pads and prescribing an exercise program for their patients. Another upside? You don’t have to wait on the long line at the pharmacy to pick up the prescription or worry about unwanted side effects. Instead, you can start an exercise routine to supercharge your health while also reaping the benefit of that endorphin rush you get after a sweat dripping workout. Talk about a total win. Not only can you help support your physical health, but your mental health will benefit too.

#7 Online Training

Gone are the days when joining a gym was the only place you could exercise. Today, there are a wide variety of online fitness programs that you can easily follow at home. Whatever your goals or fitness level may be, there’s an online program designed for you. Most are led by professionals in the fitness industry who can guide you through the program. The FitOn app offers everything from boot camp to yoga routines taught by world-class celebrity trainers and brings a fitness class right to you in the comfort of your own home – and it’s totally free to use! Plus, you can get your friends involved, so you can workout together and bring on a little friendly competition.

The Bottom Line

With such exciting things happening in the fitness industry, it’s no wonder that the list keeps growing, and changing, each year. Try some of these and decide for yourself if it’s just a trend or if you want to make it a more permanent part of your fitness journey.
